PEP and PrEP for HIV prevention

PEP is emergency medicine taken after a possible HIV exposure. PrEP is medicine taken before exposure to stay protected. Both are prescribed by our doctors in a confidential consultation, online or in clinic.

Exposed in the last 72 hours?

Start PEP as soon as possible, ideally within 2 hours and no later than 72 hours. Do not wait for a test result. Call us now.

PEP only works if started within 72 hours

The sooner you start, the better it works. If you are unsure whether your exposure counts, call us and a doctor will advise you.

What is PEP?

PEP (post exposure prophylaxis) is a 28 day course of HIV medicines started within 72 hours of a possible exposure, such as condomless sex, a condom break, sexual assault, or a needlestick injury. It lowers the chance of HIV taking hold in the body. You will need an HIV test before starting and follow up HIV tests afterwards.

What is PrEP?

PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis) is medicine taken by HIV negative people to prevent HIV. When taken as prescribed, it is highly effective at preventing HIV from sex. Before starting, you need an HIV test and a few baseline tests such as kidney function and hepatitis B. You then see a doctor and retest every 3 months.

Who should consider PrEP?

  • People with a partner living with HIV who is not virally suppressed
  • People who have condomless sex with partners of unknown HIV status
  • Men who have sex with men and transgender people at ongoing risk
  • People who have needed PEP more than once
  • People with a recent STI diagnosis

PrEP does not protect against other STIs, so we also offer regular STI screening.
