HIV Window Period: When Should You Get Tested After a Risk?

Medically reviewed by the Medical Director, Cupid Clinics. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Quick answer: The HIV window period is the time between exposure and when a test can reliably detect the virus. It depends on the test: a NAT (RNA PCR) can detect HIV from about 10 days, a lab-based 4th generation test from 18 to 45 days, and an antibody-only rapid test can take up to 90 days. If the exposure was within the last 72 hours, don’t wait for a test. Ask about PEP first.

If you’re reading this at 2 a.m. after a condom broke or a night you’re now worried about, take a breath. Most people who come to us anxious after a single exposure test negative. The aim of this page is to help you test at the right time, so the result actually means something.

What is the HIV window period?

After HIV enters the body, it takes time for the virus, or the body’s response to it, to reach levels a test can measure. Testing too early can give a negative result even when infection has happened. That gap is the window period.

Window period by test type

TestWhat it detectsEarliest usefulConclusive from
NAT (HIV RNA PCR)The virus itselfAbout 10 daysUsually 33 days, confirm with a 4th gen test
4th generation (antigen + antibody)p24 antigen and antibodiesAbout 18 days45 days (6 weeks) for most people
Antibody-only / rapid testsAntibodiesAbout 23 days90 days (3 months)

These timings follow CDC and WHO guidance. Your doctor may ask you to repeat a test in specific situations, for example if you took PEP or have had more than one exposure.

Which test should I choose?

  • Less than 72 hours since exposure: speak to a doctor about PEP now. Testing can wait.
  • 10 to 17 days: a NAT gives the earliest reliable answer.
  • 18 days to 6 weeks: a 4th generation test is useful; repeat at 6 weeks if negative.
  • 6 weeks or more: a negative 4th generation test is conclusive for most people.

What about symptoms?

Some people get a flu-like illness 2 to 4 weeks after infection: fever, sore throat, rash or swollen glands. Many get no symptoms at all, and the same symptoms are very common with ordinary viral infections. Symptoms can’t confirm or rule out HIV. Only a test can.

Frequently asked questions

Is a negative 4th generation test at 4 weeks reliable?

It’s encouraging, since most infections show up by then, but it isn’t final. Repeat at 6 weeks to be sure.

Do I need to test again at 3 months?

Not if you had a lab-based 4th generation test at 6 weeks or later and no new exposure. Antibody-only rapid tests do need 3 months.

Does PEP change the window period?

Yes. If you took PEP, your doctor will advise testing after you finish the 28-day course, usually again at about 3 months from exposure.

Is testing confidential?

Yes. At Cupid Clinics your results are shared only with you, and you can book home sample collection if you’d rather not visit a clinic.
